This lists all the family names of the men living in Canton Bern aged between 20 and 70 in 1798, the year of the French invasion of Switzerland. The French obliged all the men in every canton in Switzerland to sign an Oath of Allegiance to the new constitution. In the case of Canton Bern, this involved 60,137 people. The complete documents – known as the “lists of citizens” (Bürgerverzeichnisse) – include the age of each man taking the oath, his occupation, the place where his family originated (Heimatsort), and the place where he actually lived. As such, they are the equivalent of a complete census of adult males a whole generation before the census of 1835-7. The American publisher Picton press is currently preparing to publish these lists in full. |
